Profiles
Debbie Knight
Debbie was snapped up for her beautifully smooth voice and has put up with the other "slightly older people" for some time now. She perseveres though, bringing back the wow! factor to swing music.
She brings her own style to tunes like “Love is the Drug” and can sing acapella ..... or even on her own.... Occasionally she is accompanied by just one other member of the band.
Steve Sharman
A born pianist, Steve has a perfect ear for music. From an early age he would spend all day talking about flattened 5th’s etc. If you dropped a penny he would tell you “that will go well with an Ebm7 chord! – Spooky! Taking Cape Town by storm in the "Aristocrats" he rose to great heights in the music world – about 30,000 feet actually, as his piano playing could be heard by anyone flying South African Airways.
He is our “Musical Director” and is looked up to by all members of the band – He’s taller than the rest of us!
Adrian MacDonald
A complete all-rounder, Adrian plays the bass guitar but is equally at home with any guitar (have a listen to him singing “Built for Comfort”). Here he sings and lets rip with a metal finger of some sort.
He has been in the music business for years and is well known by many musicians and runs open mic nights in several pubs in the South East. He and his mixing board are the brains behind the sound system.
David Dickson
David started playing the drums at school at the age of 15.
After school, he played in a variety of bands at the same time because in those days live bands were in! So he played at the London University jazz nights, in rock groups and other modern and trad jazz bands. Later on he and Steve played in “The Aristocrats” rock group in Cape Town.
Today he finds playing the drums less stressful than playing a round of golf.
Gerry Smith
Gerry has been blowing into pipes of various kinds since he was four years old. A once familiar sight busking on the London Underground he studied music at Goldsmiths College and has played with many working bands over the years in a whole range of styles from classical repertoire to rock, pop, blues and folk. He also teaches sax and clarinet.
Andrew Millen
Andy came and sat in for us once at a rehearsal and we wouldn't let him go home until he agreed to join the band! He has a long time passion for many types of music and therefore has the versatility that we strive to maintain as a function band. He gets involved with many projects including running sessions for special needs children and adults. He runs his own open mic sessions and is well known throughout Surrey, Sussex and surrounding areas.
